Philosophical Context of Australian Education
Philosophy of education has faced major challenges in many places over the past decade and longer. It is obvious that problem facing the field are not attributable merely to institutional and structural changes, but also critically involve issues on content and method.
Richard Peters’ Professor of Philosophy of Education, in 1962 played a major part in the spread of analytic techniques in Education. Peter argued that to be educated a person must need:
A.To be in possession of a body of knowledge or some conceptual scheme, rather than merely isolated know-how and skills
B. To be transformed by this understanding, such that, for example, knowledge of history would affect the way one looks at buildings or institution
C. To be committed to the standards or norms implicit in various types of understanding, as the scientists is committed to certain rules or evidence and inquiry.
Bellow are a list of some of the significant educational contributors of early pioneers from the past five centuries. Each pioneers idea relates to the changing perspectives on the ways children develop and, correspondingly, changes in beliefs about the learning process. Despite the fact that most of these ideas were presented in the past centuries, a lot of the ideas are still well incorporated in schools and teachers classrooms.
